I don't know about you, but there was a time when leaving the house felt harder than the actual outing.
I would rush around packing the diaper bag, get my daughter dressed, somehow get everyone into the car, and then immediately realize I forgot something.
Sometimes it was the wipes, sometimes it was snacks or something else.
After doing this enough times, I realized the problem wasn't that I was forgetful. The problem was that I was trying to pack my diaper bag from scratch every single time.
Only got a "mom minute"? Here's what I keep in my diaper bag.

A filling backup drink for the days I need it.This is what I changed
Instead of packing every time we leave the house, I keep my diaper bag almost completely packed all the time.
When we're heading out, I only add a few fresh items:
- Water bottle
- Fresh fruit
- Any meal I packed for that day
- Any other necessity like different shoes or swimming costume
Everything else stays in the bag permanently. And this one change has saved me so much stress.
What never leaves my diaper bag
The first thing I keep stocked at all times is my diaper-changing setup:
- The Basics: 3-4 diapers or pull-ups.
- A Reliable Mat: A compact, wipeable Portable Changing Pad so I never have to place my daughter directly on a public surface. This comes with a cover so you can keep the bag clean.
- Gentle Wipes: A pack of hypoallergenic Momcozy Water Wipes for quick clean-ups.
- Skin Protection: A small box of Vaseline for preventing rashes.
I talk more about the products we use and why in my diaper changing routine post.
Keeping these items permanently in the bag means I never have to think about them before leaving.
Snacks have saved me more times than I can count
Toddlers don't always get hungry when it's convenient. That's why I always keep a few backup snacks in my diaper bag. Usually that includes shelf-stable snacks with a long expiration date:
- Fruit Bars: I love packing That's It Fruit Bars because they have zero added sugar.
- Savory Crunch: A small pouch of Plain Makhana (Fox Nuts) for a popcorn-like crunch without the sugar.
- Backup Drink: I also keep a Horizon Organic Shelf Stable Milk in the bag. Most days I don't need it, but on the days I do, I'm very happy it's there.

Spare clothes are non-negotiable
If there's one thing motherhood has taught me, it's that accidents happen when you're least prepared.
I always keep:
- One extra shirt
- One extra pair of pants
- Socks
- Lightweight jacket
- Hat or cap
Most days they never get used. But when you need them, you really need them.
Pro tip: pack for yourself too
For the longest time, I packed everything for my daughter and nothing for myself. Rather than carrying two bags I just keep a few essentials for myself in her diaper bag too:
- Chapstick
- Sanitary napkins / tampons
- Cash and a credit card
- Hair ties and a small comb
They don't take up much room, but they've saved me countless times.
The small things that make life easier
A few other items that permanently live in my diaper bag:
- Hand sanitizer
- Baby moisturizer
- Bandages
- Burp cloth or washcloth
- Extra hair ties (my daughter has a special talent for removing every hair tie from her head right before we arrive somewhere, so extras are a must!)
My biggest diaper bag lesson
If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: keep duplicates.
- An extra outfit
- An extra pair of shoes
- An extra pack of wipes
At some point you'll take something out of the bag, forget to put it back, and only realize it when you're away from home.
I've learned that spending a little extra on a second set of essentials is usually worth it.
Final thoughts
This isn't perfect, but keeping the basics packed at all times has made leaving the house so much easier.
And most days, I can get out the door with a toddler and a fully packed diaper bag in under two minutes.
